Super Food Diet

The Top Super Food Diet Foods supply the nutrients to help you stay in optimal health.

What are Super Foods?

There is no official definition of a super food as yet, but it is generally agreed that the term refers to the range of foods that purport to have health-enhancing properties (besides filling you up when you are hungry).

Think of books you've seen with titles like Cancer Fighting Super Foods, Top Super Foods For Better Health, Super Healing Foods ... You get the idea.

A super food diet is worth the effort if your health is not as good as it should be, which is often the case if you have led a fairly inactive life, and/or your diet contains too much processed and refined foods. Super foods are different. They fill you up in a low-calorie way, and their high nutrition value helps your cells to do the vital work of regenerating your body and repairing the damage from the oxidative stress caused by free radicals.

Ultimately, the most important factor for good health is a fitness nutrition plan that includes a variety of nutritious foods (what some experts call a rainbow diet) and a regular fitness routine. Many of us, particularly those of us living in Westernized cultures and developed countries, eat too much processed foods and spend a disproportionate amount of our leisure time on the couch or in front of the computer.

Here is a list of the Top Super Foods and how they benefit us. No one food can claim to be the best super food as they each have unique qualities. The best approach is to try and incorporate as many different varieties as you can in your Super Food Diet.

Benefits of Super Foods

Kiwis are among the most nutritionally dense fruits. They rank up there as one of the best sources of antioxidants in foods, and are also a great source of potassium, fiber, Vitamins A and E, and almost a full day's requirement for vitamin C. due to their high fiber content, kiwis can act as a mild laxative and thereby a natural cure for constipation.

All of these working together help you control your weight and lower your risk of heart disease and diabetes. Lentils and chickpeas are commonly used in Indian vegetarian curries. Another popular side dish seen in restaurants, particularly Japanese restaurants, is Edamame: boiled green baby soybeans in the pod, which are packed with heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids.

Broccoli is is a rich source of Vitamin A, Vitamin C, and Vitamin K. It has cancer fighting properties and can be used in a large variety of foods such as a steamed, or roasted as a side dish, tossed into a salad or soups, or added to rice and grains for extra texture, taste, color, and of course, nutrition.

Salmon is known as a super food because of its high content of omega-3 fatty acids, iron, and low saturated fats, making it a low-calorie, high nutrition lunch and dinner option. Studies show that omega-3 fatty acids help to protect our heart.

A word of caution about salmon in the Super Food Diet...

If you eat salmon that has fed on smaller fish that have ingested chemicals like polychlorinated biphenyl compounds (PCBs), beware.

What is PCB?

According to the US Agency for Toxic Substances & Disease Registry, there are no known natural sources of PCBs. Decades ago, PCBs were used as coolants and lubricants in electrical plants and devices. However, they were banned in 1977 because of evidence that they build up in the environment and cause harmful effects to human health.

Common side effects of PCB exposure

  • skin conditions and rashes
  • acute systemic poisoning
  • liver damage
  • irregular menstrual cycles
  • lowered immune response
  • fatigue
  • headache
  • cough
  • poor cognitive development

Studies have shown that women exposed to high PCB levels from fish gave birth to babies with lower birth weight and abnormal behavior responses. The babies imbibe the PCBs through their mothers' breast milk.

Besides contaminating the fish we eat, PCB exposure can come through some brands of fish oil supplements on the market. Indeed, a lawsuit filed in the US at the time of writing is accusing eight fish oil producers for selling fish oil supplements with excessive PCB levels.

So go ahead and enjoy your salmon, whether wild or farmed, but don't overdo it. You want your omega-3, but be smart about limiting your chemical exposure.

Chemicals are everywhere. That is why we encourage anyone who wants a healthier life to consider the pros and cons and to eat organic wherever possible. We really don't know what's in our food supply.
