Have you heard the old saying, “Beauty is only Skin Deep”?
Our skin is the largest organ in our body, which makes it the entry point of toxins into the system. Anything we apply to the skin is potentially absorbed. This includes anti-aging creams, face moisturizers, facial cleansers, cosmetic foundations, sunscreen, shampoo and deodorants.
Off-the-shelf products contain a notoriously high level of harmful chemical ingredients (some of which are cancer-causing) that we may not be aware of because they are not fully disclosed on ingredient labels. Even if they were, we might not understand them. Therein lies our double danger. Over time, daily use of these products have been shown to contribute to toxic waste in the body - and the onset of unnecessary medical diseases.
In the US, the cosmetics industry is self-regulated. Resource-strapped regulators do not have the legal muscle or political will to enforce the findings of product and ingredient reviews. This means we don't yet know as much as we should about the effects of product ingredients on our long-term health. In the meantime, we continue to buy on the basis of brand recognition and price, and unknowingly contribute to the levels of toxins in our bodies.
Indeed, EWG has found that in the past 30 years, only 9 of 10,500 or so potentially harmful ingredients contained in personal care products have been banned.
EWG publishes on its website a safety guide to cosmetics and personal care products. Incidentally, the guide is called Skin Deep.
So, how Skin Deep safe are your current skincare products?
Can you be sure that you are not unwittingly exposing yourself, your unborn children or your fashion-loving teen to cosmetic chemicals that can cause chemical poisoning?
Let's have a look at what's actually in your skincare product.
What goes into an OTC (over-the-counter) moisturizer?
The typical Moisturizer Ingredient Label today reads something more like an apothecary's list. Some of the ingredients are harmful and irritating and often detrimental to your health.
A typical Moisturizer Ingredient Label reads something like this:
Water
Dimethicone (silica)
Carbomer 941
PEG-50
Almond Glycerides (almond)
Sodium Laurenth sulphate (coconut)
Cocoamidopropyl
Hydroxysultanet
Triethanolamine (TEA)
Methylchloroisothiazolinone
Phenoxyethanol
Methylparaben (organic preservative)
FD&C Yellow No.6
Fragrance
What a mouthful. What do those long names really mean?
Let us take Triethanolamine (TEA) as the starting point of our discussion.
TEA is a synthetic emulsifier. It is highly acidic and a main ingredient in over 40% of the cosmetics today. TEA has been found to be contaminated with nitrosamines, which are potent carcinogens. When working with this ingredient, employees are warned to wear special protective gear as it is severely irritating to body tissues and possibly corrosive to the eyes, and avoid breathing any vapors.
The Explanation of their Carcinogenicity: AMINES REACT WITH NITROSATING AGENTS TO FORM NITROSOAMINES, WHICH ARE CARCINOGENIC. (Information extracted from Material Safety Data Sheets, which are recognized as the international standard for providing safety information about chemical ingredients used by humans)
What are Anionic Surfactants and Nitrosating Agents?
These are the other poisonous chemicals in commonly used personal care and skin care products. You might recognize some of them from the Moisturizer Ingredient Label above. They can cause nitrosamine contamination, which have been determined to form cancer in laboratory animals. There are wide and repeated concerns in the USA and Europe about the contamination of cosmetics products with nitrosamines.
Examples of Anionic Surfactants and Nitrosating Agents:
2-bromo-2-nitropropane-1,3-diol
Cocoyl Sarcosine
DEA compounds
Imidazolidinyl Urea
Formaldehyde
Hydrolysed Animal Protein
Lauryl Sarcosine
MEA compounds
Quaternium-7, 15, 31, 60, etc
Sodium Lauryl Sulfate
Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate
Sodium Laureth Sulfate
Ammonium Laureth Sulfate
Sodium Methyl Cocoyl Taurate
TEA compounds
