The Effects of Pollution

The effects of pollution in our world today can be seen in a myriad of places.

In simple cause and effect terms, the commercial and private overuse of resources has led to chemical poisoning, air pollution, water pollution, and soil pollution. Pollution is one major contributor to the presence of free radicals that damage the cells of the body, stress our organs and cause diseases. From contaminated and refined foods to polluted water, staggering incidences of preventable medical diseases are affecting people across the globe.

Effects of pollution on our bodies

Our bodies have become burdened with high levels of free radicals, unstable active chemical compounds in our bodies that can increase our risk for developing certain autoimmune diseases and cancers such as breast cancer, skin, stomach, and lung cancer. By neutralizing the free radicals before they can harm the body’s cells, you can build up immune system function and your resistance to common medical diseases and health-related issues, which we will discuss throughout the site.

The processed foods we eat

Did you know that trans fats and saturated fats in our food hang around long after the meal has been eaten? Fats cling to our blood vessels and organs, weighing us down with a cluttered, sickly bowel and the possible onset of fatty liver disease.

How can we reverse the damage from overuse of processed foods?

A two-pronged solution is recommended.

First, increase the amount of living foods and super foods in your diet.

Living foods are unprocessed foods that still retain the vitamins, minerals and enzymes needed to help you properly break down and digest your food. Super foods are called that because of their apparent health enhancing properties.

Secondly, care for your bowel and liver with a good detoxification routine.

Get to know the benefits of a healthy liver cleanse and regular use of Probiotic Supplements.

Probiotics make use of the beneficial microorganisms naturally produced in the body or contained in certain foods. These beneficial microorganisms help to improve digestion, rebalance the intestinal flora lost through the overuse of antibiotics, and keep harmful bacteria from growing to levels where they can cause disease.

Effects of pollution and the water we drink

The water we drink is highly processed, treated and disinfected. This is to combat the effects of contamination from natural and synthetic sources. The latter include sewage, industrial activity, pesticide runoff, improper dumping and defective water treatment.

Even though tap water in developed countries is generally safe for drinking, there are those who have concerns about chlorine levels in drinking water and fluoride in drinking water.

Possible solutions: buy bottled water (preferably water that is bottled at its source) or use a water filter or purifier that removes impurities without disturbing dissolved minerals that are essential to health.

Our household cleaners

Dish washing and laundry detergents and multipurpose cleaners emphasize effectiveness over safety. Product labels usually contain warn that you should not inhale or swallow the product as this can cause irritation or poisoning. This is an indication of the harshness of the contents.

Some companies are realizing that there is a growing demand for safer cleaning products and have developed phosphate-free, ammonia-free and fragrance-free alternatives. Look for these green alternatives in your supermarket aisles or online. If you can, choose organic.

What better place to reduce the effects of pollution than the one place closest to your heart: your home.

What are we feeding our skin?

Did you know the cosmetics industry is self-regulated and resource-strapped regulators do not have the legal muscle to enforce the findings of product and ingredient reviews?

The skin is the largest organ in our body, which makes it the entry point of toxins into the system. Off-the-shelf products contain a notoriously high level of harmful chemical ingredients (some of which are cancer-causing) that we may not be aware of because they are not fully disclosed on ingredient labels, and even if they were, we might not understand what they mean. Over time, daily use of these products adds to the toxic burden in the body and makes us vulnerable to disease.

Educate yourself on the effects of using these products. Begin by reading ingredient labels, and learn more about the effects of parabens, sodium lauryl/laureth sulphate and phthalates on you and your children. Secondly, switch to organic personal care products. Better still, find suppliers whose products carry Organic Certification, that are Certified Organic.

Your journey to optimum health starts with a series of small steps in the right direction to reduce the effects of Pollution in your life. Then take action to make the lifestyle changes that we have discussed in our articles. You can start today by creating a positive chain reaction that will have long-lasting benefits for you and your children - a legacy of good health that will be your best gift to the future.
